Formerly China’s second-largest EV manufacturer, Zhidou Auto declared bankruptcy in 2019 as a result of financial challenges. But now the automaker is preparing to make a comeback with its new Rainbow EV which is expected to hit the Chinese market in April.
According to initial information from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the 2-door four-seater EV will be available in two variants, one with a 20 kW electric motor & 17.18kWh battery pack good for 201 km CLTC driving range, and the other with a slightly bigger 30kW motor and 17.3 kWh battery for a range of up to 205 km.
Zhidou Rainbow measures 3,224mm long, 1,515mm wide, and 1,630 mm tall with a wheelbase of 2,100 mm. These dimensions are very much comparable to the Daihatsu Cuore we had here between 2000 and 2012, Cuore was 3,295/1,395/1,465mm with a 2,300mm wheelbase. The Rainbow weighs just 800kg and will come equipped with either 13-inch or 15-inch wheels depending on the variant.

Geely and Aima Technology Group have restructured Zhidou out of bankruptcy, with the chairmans of both companies, Zhang Jian and Li Shufu, playing significant roles. Aima is a manufacturer of electric bicycles and its sales outlets are believed to be used by Zhidou to sell the Rainbow EV. Zhidou was one of the first new energy vehicle (NEV) companies to achieve more than 100,000 accumulative sales. The company saw its highest-ever sales in 2017, which unfortunately was the same year when changes in Chinese regulations were introduced, with all EVs with less than 250 km no longer eligible for subsidies. Sales then fell abruptly and by 2019 the company had to file bankruptcy.

It further illustrates the extent of evolution in the Chinese NEV market. Low-range electric vehicles could not be sold without subsidies in 2019. However, these days, manufacturers can make EVs at a price that is highly appealing to buyers without the need for subsidies.
