Proton Confident to Achieve 100,000 Sales in Malaysia this Year

Geely-backed Proton continues to outshine in Malaysian market as its sales continues to rise, with 9,503 units sold in October making a cumulative 10-month figure of 79,833 units this year.

This is a 46% increase compared to the 10-month figure from previous year whereas the carmaker has secured 16% market share in Malaysian market which is a 5.2% increase from previous year.

Proton, having achieved its sales target for this year within just 9 months is confident that it will breach the 100,000 sales mark in 2019. Proton’s Chief Executive Officer Dr Li Chunrong said:

“We are humbled by the response our products have received from Malaysian car buyers. The hard work has paid off with increased sales and we are now confident of being able to sell 100,000 units this year, providing us with a solid base to move forward in 2020 and beyond.”

Proton has launched 5 new models this year including X70, Saga, Iriz, Persona and Exora RC, while improving its dealership network in Malaysia. The company is also the only major manufacturer (in Malaysia) to achieve double-digit growth in 2019.

According to Proton, strong sales of the X70 continued for the 10th consecutive month, as it retained its top position in the premium SUV sales rankings. Over 24,000 units of the X70 have been delivered so far, making it Malaysia’s fastest-selling SUV.

The newly launched Saga facelift achieved 51-month sales high. A total of 4,273 units of Proton Saga were sold last month, while for the first 10 months of the year, the total units sold stood at 30,331 registering a 26% increase from last year. Furthermore Proton already has over 28,000 bookings in its bag. Similarly, the Exora, Iriz and Persona have also shown a collective 21% increase thus far this year.

At the time of takeover Geely announced that it is committed to supporting the transformation of Proton with its expertise, and aims to build Proton into the most competitive brand in Malaysia and a leading brand in Southeast Asia. And this vision seems to be turning out into reality.

Proton has managed to retain its spot as the second bestselling brand in Malaysia and it aims to wrestle with Perodua to take the top slot. According to Li Chunrong, Proton’s target is to become the number one carmaker in Malaysia and number three in ASEAN.

The company is also in process of expanding its feet in the region with its first assembly plant in Southeast Asia being constructed in Karachi, Pakistan. Proton cars will hit the local roads by mid 2020 with 1.3 liter Saga sedan as the first offering.
