The third-generation Kia Picanto facelift that debuted last year has now reached the South African markets. The latest iteration was already launched in Australia late last year, another RHD (right-hand driven) market.
In terms of styling the South African-spec Picanto features the same Opposites United design philosophy as seen in other markets, with the overhauled front fascia that includes a new grille, bespoke LED headlights, and a thoroughly revised rear fascia with new taillights and a reworked bumper.
The facelifted Kia Picanto comprises 6 derivatives, available with the option of three trim levels, while the engine and transmission options have remained the same as those offered with the pre-facelifted variants. This includes a 1.0L three-cylinder petrol good for 65 hp & 95 Nm and a 1.2L four-cylinder petrol engine that develops 83 hp & 122 Nm. Both engines are offered with either a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 4-speed automatic gearbox.

The entry-level LX trim features body-colored bumpers and side-mirror housings. The side mirrors are electrically adjustable. Stepping inside, the interior is equipped with an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, which incorporates Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and displays the feed from the rear-view camera setup. A four-speaker sound system is included while the multifunction steering wheel is wrapped in leather.
Then the EX trim upgrades to new 14-inch alloy wheels, electrically folding side mirrors, a storage box between the front pews, an updated 4.2-inch TFT instrument cluster, two additional tweeter speakers, and, notably, ESC and hill-start assist. Finally, the range-topping EX Plus variants gain a keyless start, automatic climate control, rear park distance sensors (to supplement the reverse-view camera), LED taillamps, and 15-inch alloy wheels.
Kia Picanto is among the most popular affordable cars in the South African market. Since the first generation’s introduction to South Africa, more than 100,000 Picantos have been sold. According to Kia:
“The Picanto is undoubtedly a mainstay in the Kia product line-up and has for many years been recognised by industry experts and members of the press alike as one of the best cars you can buy in the entry-level A-segment. It’s safe to say that the Picanto is just about everyone’s favorite Kia. The latest iteration builds on a remarkable legacy and sets the range up for even bigger successes as it enhances the notion of always moving forward.”
