All-New 2023 MG7 Goes on Sale in China

The all-new MG7 which was unveiled in August 2022 has been officially launched in the Chinese car market. The MG7, positioned as the largest sedan in the MG’s lineup, features a decently potent drivetrain against a competitive pricing point. Among other advantages, the first 15,000 customers will benefit from a lifetime warranty.

The key thing to note is that the MG7 wears black MG badges, as it’s the first product from MG’s new Black Label series which is targeted toward young consumers. The Black Label refers to a line of new high-end vehicles with added luxury and sportiness compared to the regular MG lineup.

MG7 measures 4,884 mm long, 1,889 mm wide, and 1,447 mm tall with a 2,778 mm wheelbase, making it very much comparable in dimensions to the Toyota Camry XV70 we have here that measures 4,880/ 1,840/1,450 mm and has a 2,820mm wheelbase.

The new MG7 adopts a low-slung fastback silhouette, depicting a muscular body with strong dynamic lines and pronounced rear shoulders. It features sharp aggressive-looking headlamps, a dominating grille, a muscular profile with ample creases, frame-less doors, full-width connected tail lamps, racy lips, quad exhausts, and an active spoiler.

The interior of the MG7 is appealing, with a block of two screens- a 10.25 inch for the instrument panel while the primary screen is 12.3 inches. Behind the touch screen is a row of capacitive touch controls for climate control. There is a D-cut multi-function 3-spoked  steering wheel. The central tunnel has a monostable gear selector, an engine start/stop button, two cup holders, and a wireless phone charging pad. There is a huge compartment space behind the armrest with two USB-C connectors.

The MG’s front seats are sporty, with strong side support and an integrated headrest. A panoramic roof makes the interior look even more classy. Depending on the variant, the interior can be had in 3 different colors: black, green, and red. The red is exclusive to the top 2 variants.

The MG7 can be customized with a BOSE acoustic system that can accommodate up to 14 speakers. Customers can also add optional equipment including a head-up display and self-parking system. The MG7 features ADAS systems as well as an optional MG NGP pilot system.

Under the hood, there are two turbocharged ICE engines to choose from. The first is a 1.5L 15FDE engine with 188 horsepower and 300 Nm of torque and a 7-speed DCT gearbox. The second engine is the 2.0L 2A4E, which produces 261 horsepower and 405 Nm and is mated with a 9-speed automatic transmission. The claimed acceleration time to go from 0 to 100 km/h is only 6.5 seconds.

As for pricing, the entry-level version costs only 119,800 yuan ($17,400) while the top-spec one costs 169,800 yuan ($24,650). The fully loaded one with all the optional features included costs 181,800 yuan ($26,490). However, as mentioned before, to lure buyers MG is offering the first 15,000 customers of MG7 a lifetime warranty for core components and 10,000 yuan (1,450 USD) subsidy.

MG7 in Pakistan

When MG7 was first unveiled, the company said it will be destined for various export markets just like the new MG4. Javed Afridi, the key figure behind MG cars in Pakistan also tweeted about MG7 in December 2022 but his post wasn’t well received by his followers. Afridi often tweets about various MG cars, usually labeling them as ‘Coming Soon’ or often seeking suggestions regarding their pricing.

He also created a lot of buzz for the MG3 hatchback to be priced below the Rs 2.0 million mark, but apart from the MG HS crossover, the company hasn’t launched a single locally assembled vehicle in Pakistan from more than a dozen options Javed Afridi has so far shared on his social handles.
