BAIC (Beijing Automotive Industry Corporation) has unveiled the new Beijing X55 SUV in South Africa (a right-hand drive market like ours) that will set the foundation for the Chinese automaker going into the future.

Chinese automakers are now slowly gaining on with their presence felt in the right-hand drive markets, and the new X55 SUV is yet another example. The new Beijing X55 is a completely original design. BAIC touts as a compact SUV with avant-garde styling that employs the latest generation of the Group’s BMFA (Beijing modular functional architecture) platform. This platform will underpin BAIC’s future vehicle models and plug-in hybrid vehicle models.
Under the hood, the Beijing X55 SUV gets a 1.5L turbocharged engine good for 175hp and 305Nm & comes paired with a DCT gearbox. The SUV can hit 100 km/h from a standstill in 7.8 seconds according to BAIC. Offering multiple driving modes including eco, comfort, sports, and smart, the X55 SUV boasts fuel economy figures of 13.88 km per liter.
According to Hugo HU, the Vice President of Sales and Marketing at BAIC South Africa, the company has invested in developing intelligent cars under a new brand. Harnessing a strategic partnership with Daimler, the Chinese automaker also proudly mentioned that future models will include technology from the storied German brand.

Details related to equipment & pricing are yet to be shared by BAIC. The X55 however is expected to formally go on sale in the South African market before the end of this year.
