BYD Atto 3 Gets a 5-Star Rating in Green NCAP

BYD Atto 3 achieved a full 5-star rating in Green NCAP, an independent environmental car testing agency under the European New Car Assessment Program (Euro NCAP). Green NCAP scores the cars based on how much harm they cause to the environment, sustainability, and energy efficiency.

Atto 3 performed admirably in the -7°C lab test, using only 25.1 kWh/100 km, which was a fantastic result and demonstrated a well-designed heating system employing several waste heat sources.

Atto 3 was given a gradual, 11 kW charge throughout the battery capacity test. The amount of energy in the battery, 59.3 kWh, nearly matches the 60 kWh stated value. The Atto 3 is powered by BYD’s LFP Blade battery. Plus, the complete battery recharge requires 68.4 kWh from the power grid, resulting in a rather low grid-to-battery output efficiency of 87%.

The Atto 3 has declared consumption of 16 kWh/100km. The Cold test measured consumption of 18.2 kWh/100km, while the Warm test was 18.0 kWh/100 km, which is still fair enough. In the highway cycle, the consumption was significantly more, 28.1 kWh/ 100 km, corresponding to a range of 244 km. As mentioned, the EV excelled in the -7°C Cold Ambient test with only 25.1 kWh consumption. Atto 3 On-Road Drive was performed at 19°C and needed 18 kWh/100 km – resulting in a range of 376 km.

Atto 3’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions originate only from the electricity supply: about 50-80 g CO2-eq./km, depending on the test consumption. According to the Green NCAP report, thanks to its powertrain, heating concept, and the relatively low CO2 emissions of the EU electricity mix, the car scores a high 9.7 out of 10 in GHG.

Overall the Atto 3 scored 10/10 on the Clean Air Index (naturally, as it has no exhaust), 9.5/10 on the Energy Efficiency Index, and 9.7/10 on the Greenhouse Gas Index. Green NCAP concludes that improving the Atto 3’s charging/discharging behavior of the charger and the battery would boost the results of the vehicle even higher.
