A Hyundai Ioniq 5 EV has earned a Guinness World Record for the greatest altitude change by an electric car, covering 5,802 meters. This record-breaking journey, organized by Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL), saw a team from Evo India drive the Ioniq 5 over 14 days and 4,900 kilometers. The route took them from Umling La in Ladakh (India’s highest motorable point at 5,799 meters above sea level) to Kuttanad in Kerala (three meters below sea level).
The unmodified (pre-facelift) Ioniq 5 successfully navigated through tough terrains and extreme weather conditions, from the freezing temperatures and steep mountain passes of the Himalayas to the humid coastal regions of Kerala. According to HMIL MD Unsoo Kim:
“We are incredibly proud to see the Hyundai Ioniq 5 make history by achieving the Guinness World Record for the greatest altitude change by an electric car. This accomplishment reflects Hyundai’s relentless dedication to innovation, technological excellence, and sustainability. The Ioniq 5’s performance in such extreme conditions reflects its engineering prowess and durability. At Hyundai, we are dedicated to pushing boundaries and setting new benchmarks in e-mobility, and this record further reinforces our vision of ‘Progress for Humanity’.”
India offers only one pre-facelift variant of the Ioniq 5, priced at INR 46.05 lac ex-showroom. It comes with a 72.6 kWh battery and features a single 217 PS/350 Nm rear motor. This setup provides a range of 631 km and a 0-100 km/h time of 7.6 seconds.
