Nearly a decade after debuting the RZ4E-TC 1.9-liter Ddi BluePower four-cylinder turbodiesel in the D-Max pickup truck and MU-X SUV, Isuzu has significantly enhanced the engine with a comprehensive update. Renamed the Ddi MaxForce, this essentially all-new powerplant offers better performance, improved fuel efficiency, and reduced emissions.
The updated RZ4F-TC engine now features an increased displacement of 2.2 liters, along with redesigned cylinders incorporating a high-flow lubrication system and a high-swirl combustion chamber to enhance combustion efficiency. Additional upgrades include ultra-low-friction pistons, an electronic variable geometry turbocharger, high-pressure direct injectors (operating at up to 250 MPa), and a multi-core ECU.
Performance has naturally improved—the MaxForce engine delivers 163 PS at 3,600 rpm and 400 Nm of torque between 1,600 and 2,400 rpm, marking gains of 13 PS and 50 Nm over the previous 1.9-liter unit. Even more notable is the significant 56% increase in torque at a standstill, boosting step-off performance. Isuzu also highlights a 10.7% reduction in extra-urban fuel consumption and claims the engine achieves the lowest carbon dioxide emissions in its class.
The updated engine is paired with a new 8-speed Rev Tronic automatic transmission, engineered to keep it operating in the optimal rev range; a six-speed manual option is also available. Isuzu reports that the engine has undergone rigorous testing over 2.2 million kilometers to uphold the brand’s renowned reliability.

This engine replaces the 1.9-liter unit in most applications, except for the newly introduced mild hybrid variant. Meanwhile, the larger 3.0-liter 4JJ3-TCX engine continues in service, now also branded as MaxForce and equipped with the multi-core ECU. However, its outputs remain unchanged at 190 PS and 450 Nm. The update additionally introduces a new exterior color, Elbrus Grey Opaque, to the D-Max lineup.
