It’s another feather in the cap for the new Kia Niro as its plug-in hybrid version has been recognized with a Red Dot Design Award in the “Product Design” category. The recognition is considered a testament to Kia’s dedication to creating ground-breaking, premium automobiles that satisfy consumer needs while also remaining at the forefront of cutting-edge design.

Based on Kia’s “Opposites United” design concept, the Niro Plug-in Hybrid has an expressive yet logical design approach. The thoughtful and stunning appearance was created to encourage motion. ‘Heartbeat’ daytime running lights (DRLs), a distinctive Aero C-Pillar, a striking skid plate, and cladding to enhance the electrified CUV’s rugged stance are notable characteristics. The vehicle embodies a distinctly Kia design when combined with the latest iteration of the brand’s signature Tiger Face.
Three electrified powertrain options are available for the Kia Niro: pure electric, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid. All three models include eco-friendly interior materials that go along with their environmentally friendly driving options. These materials include recycled wallpaper for the headlining, VOC-free paint for the door panels, and PU vegan leather seat covers produced from Tencel from Eucalyptus trees. Additionally, the cargo screen also includes 75% recycled fibers.
Commenting on the accomplishment, Sjoerd Knipping, the Vice President of Product and Marketing at Kia Europe said:
“We are honored to be recognized by the Red Dot Design Award for our efforts, and we look forward to continuing to push the boundaries of automotive design. This recognition is a testament to the hard work of our design and engineering teams, as well as the winning nature of our design philosophy ‘Opposites United.’”
The Red Dot Design Award is one of the most coveted certifications of design quality. The level of creativity and the caliber of the designs are evaluated by a jury of international specialists each year.

This accomplishment follows a string of victories for Kia in design awards. The Niro Plug-in Hybrid’s most recent achievement is the 28th Red Dot given to a Kia car since 2009. The brand-new EV6 was named “Best of the Best” last year for its avant-garde and innovative design, while the Kia Sorento earned the Red Dot Award for Product Design in 2021.
