Among an array of non-functional concepts displayed by the Japanese automakers at the ongoing 2023 Japan Mobility Show (formerly Tokyo Auto Show), the one showcased by Mazda was probably the best looking.
Called the Iconic SP Concept, the car painted in what the company calls Viola Red color boasts smooth & beautiful Mazda-esque styling elements. According to Mazda, the Iconic SP was designed as a response to the emotions of customers who “love cars” and “desire a car that simply embodies the joy of driving”.
Butterfly doors swing open to reveal a cabin that is as simple in design as the outside. A fully digital instrument cluster, a central wide-format touchscreen, a sporty steering wheel, and paddle shifters are the fixtures in an interior space that appear to be mostly upholstered in Alcantara.
Mazda did not provide many specifics regarding the Iconic SP, although it revealed its dimensions. It measures 4,180 mm long, 1,850 mm wide, 1,150 mm tall, and has a wheelbase of 2,590 mm. For the sake of comparison, the Mazda MX-5 is smaller as it is 3,915 mm long, 1,730 mm wide, 1,235 mm tall and its wheelbase is 2,310 mm.
According to Mazda, a hybrid system will combine an undisclosed number of electric motors with a twin-rotor rotary setup under the hood. Mazda claims that the rotary engine only generates power, meaning that it is merely a range extender that charges the battery rather than directly driving the wheels. It boasts a low center of gravity and a 50:50 weight distribution, which allows for improved vehicle handling.

The Iconic SP’s engine, Mazda says will run on carbon-neutral gasoline, but it can also “burn various fuels such as hydrogen.” The 365-hp powertrain should make the slinky sports car fairly speedy. The concept is also believed to work as a power source, allowing you to run appliances when outside or during a power outage.
As intriguing as the Iconic SP appears, keep in mind that it is still a concept, and Mazda has yet to confirm whether or not it will be moved into production. Still, looking at the recently showcased concepts at the Japan Mobility Show, the Mazda Iconic SP Concept definitely appears to be the most promising of the lot.
