Pakistan is the Largest Importer of Old Suzuki Wagon R

Suzuki Wagon R that we have here is originally the second generation of Maruti Wagon R which was produced between 2010 and 2018 in India and was replaced by the 3rd generation Wagon R in January 2019. But instead of India, the Wagon R & its parts are sourced from Indonesia where the 2nd gen Maruti Wagon R is available as Karimun Wagon R.

Recently, Suzuki Indomobil Motors (SIM) has announced to discontinue the Wagon R in Indonesia due to slow sales & to prepare for the era of electrification. Sales of Wagon R in Indonesia from January to September 2021 were only 1,772 units, averaging just 196 units a month. Contrary to this, SIM exported 13,248 units during January-September period, out of which nearly 12,500 were Wagon R, according to records from the Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries (Gaikindo). Suzuki Indonesia says Wagon R contributed 95% of the total exports of the CKD category.

In Pakistan, as of the first 4 months of this fiscal year (July-October 2021), Pak Suzuki has managed to sell 6,774 units of Wagon R averaging 1,694 units a month. According to Suzuki Indonesia, despite getting discontinued (in Indonesia), it will continue to produce Wagon R for export markets as long as demand (in export markets) stays strong.

Despite falling short of equipment & not so appealing looks, the tallboy hatchback is selling mainly due to its fuel efficiency. It is powered by 1.0L 3-cylinger engine paired to either 5-speed manual or AGS automatic gearbox. Although Pak Suzuki has finally discontinued the 2nd gen Swift from 2004, they probably won’t say goodbye to the 11-year old Wagon R so soon.
