Proton Saga to Get New Aisin 4AT Gearbox

There are certain reports circulating in the market that Proton Saga is about to receive some upgrades in Pakistan. This is likely going to be true since Proton back in its home market has introduced some changes to the Saga sedan which received its second facelift (MC2) in May last year.

Proton Saga now comes with a new Aisin 4AT gearbox in Malaysia as the automaker ditches the 4AT that was sourced from Hyundai. The Hyundai-sourced 4AT gearbox was introduced as a replacement for CVT when the Saga was facelifted back in 2019. Apart from this, the Saga will continue to remain the same albeit with minor enhancements that were introduced in the MC2 facelifted models.

Due to a shortage of CKD kits and government import restrictions, production (assembling) of Proton vehicles including the X70 and Saga, is currently on hold in Pakistan. According to information the automaker is waiting for the new fiscal budget, and although no new taxes are to be placed on the auto sector, the prices of Proton cars in Pakistan will receive a major bump due to the devaluation of currency value against the US Dollar.

Since Proton’s local partner is yet to begin its localization journey, it’s quite likely that the fresh batch of CKD kits that will consist of the new Aisin 4AT gearbox will make its way to our market. And while the inclusion of a new gearbox sees no change in Saga pricing in the Malaysian market, in Pakistan the entry-level sedan which is currently priced at PKR 32.99 lac for the flagship Ace variant is expected to breach the PKR 3.5 million mark.
