Driving a Toyota GR Yaris H2 that had been carefully modified, Rowan Atkinson arrived at Goodwood this week to show his support for alternative fuels. Atkinson, better known as Mr. Bean, is a fervent promoter of internal combustion engines and a die-hard vehicle lover.

For the Goodwood event, the Toyota GR Yaris H2 Concept still retains the same 1.6-liter three-cylinder turbocharged unit, but the engine management system has been modified to allow the car to run on hydrogen. This automobile lacks a fuel cell. Instead, it burns hydrogen that is immediately fed into the engine.
The hydrogen-powered hot hatch, according to Atkinson, who also owns a regular GR Yaris, was “tremendous fun.” Atkinson, who was a pioneer in the use of electric vehicles, has a degree in electrical and electronic engineering. He has, however, developed a growing disdain for electric vehicles, even going so far as to write a piece for the Guardian in which he claims to feel “duped.” In order to promote the long-term viability of the internal combustion engine, he urges companies to explore alternate fuels, such as hydrogen.

That’s not to say he doesn’t still like the concept of electric vehicles; it’s just that those vehicles, with their large, expensive lithium-ion batteries, aren’t exactly the “environmental panacea” that is touted. Atkinson is known for having a huge personal car collection and has previously owned a McLaren F1, Lancia Delta Integrale HF, and an Acura NSX to name a few. Atkinson keeps changing his cars. So, it’s difficult to judge his actual car collection’s worth. However, as per a 2022 report, Rowan Atkinson’s car collection is worth close to $15.2 million.
