This weekend marks the 50th anniversary of the Toyota Corolla, one of the world’s all-time best-selling cars. Since the first model went on sale in Japan on 5th November 1966, some 44.3 million Corollas have been sold globally through the end of September, including the Corolla Fielder station wagon and other variants, the Japanese automaker says.

In Japan, the Toyota Corolla claimed the top-selling spot just about three years after it was launched. Back then the Corolla came with a four-speed manual transmission on the floor which was mated to a 1.1-litre engine unlike the regular cars of that time which had typical 3-speed column shifter. The automaker is now selling the 11th generation model which is made in 13 countries and sold in more than 150 countries across the globe.

According to Italian research house Focus2move, all versions of Toyota Corolla including the North American model, the Japanese-market Corolla Axio and the international model sold in the rest of the world totaled 634,298 units between January and June this year, holding on to its crown as the world’s best-selling vehicle in the first half of 2016.
