BAIC BJ60 SUV to Compete Against Toyota Land Cruiser Prado

Chinese automaker BAIC has revealed the new BJ60 SUV that will take on the likes of Toyota Land Cruiser Prado in the Chinese market. Another automaker Great Wall Motors is also readying its Prado-rival called Tank 500, to which the BAIC BJ60 will also compete against.

The BJ60 adopts BAIC’s signature design language with a recognizable grille that we have seen with the BJ40 Plus SUV here. The dimensions and overall profile is quite reminiscent to that of Land Cruiser Prado as well as the Tank 500. In terms of dimensions, the BJ60 measures 5,020 mm long, 1,955 mm wide and 1,925 mm tall with a wheelbase of 2,820 mm and will be available in 5- and 7-seat versions.

Interior has been kept simple with a lot of straight lines, dual screens, and a black and white color scheme. The center screen is floating 12-inch unit, plus there is also an HUD, panoramic roof, rear air-vents, 260-color interior ambient lighting & more. BAIC will release more details of the BJ60 in coming days.

As for the performance, BAIC hasn’t shared any technical information yet, however as per reports the BJ60 will adopt a hybrid system with a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of just 6.0 seconds and a traveling range of 1,000 km. It will benefit from proper 4WD system as its being positioned as a genuine off-roader.

With the likes of BAIC BJ60 and GWM Tank 500, Chinese automakers are now beginning to tap the luxury SUV segment, but it will take a long time to shake the position of Toyota Land Cruiser Prado. However looking at the supply chain issues and delays in deliveries, the Chinese can make inroads in the segment particularly in their home market quite easily. But they have the ambitions to spread the wings outside of China. Will the new Chinese SUVs trouble the established names in the business, only time will tell.
