In the midst of conquering many global markets, Chinese EV behemoth BYD is making its presence felt in Southeast Asia. After becoming the leading electric vehicle brand in Thailand, BYD has now topped the EV sales charts in Malaysia.

According to data from the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA), BYD sold 3,728 electric vehicles in 2023, inching past its market rival BMW which sold 3,600 electric vehicles in Malaysia last year.
Commenting on the achievement, Jeffrey Gan, the MD of Sime Darby Motors Southeast Asia (BYD’s Malaysian market partner) said in a statement:
“Our achievement of the highest EV vehicle sales in 2023 reflects the strong support and trust of Malaysian consumers in BYD. Our comprehensive network of after-sales support nationwide is a key differentiator in our success. With the imminent arrival of the highly anticipated BYD Seal, SDBA remains dedicated to fostering the adoption of EVs in Malaysia and is confident that this will further solidify BYD’s position as a leader in the country’s evolving automotive landscape.”
BYD currently sells the Dolphin and the Atto 3 in the Malaysian market which will soon be joined by the Seal, which is open for pre-booking and will be formally launched shortly. Overall, EV sales in Malaysia reached 10,159 units in 2023, representing an increase of 286% over the 2,631 units sold in 2022.
