The all-new Kia Niro has been officially unveiled at the Seoul Mobility Show with it an updated design language together with a series of efficient powertrains. The second generation model comes as a continuation of the hybrid-electric compact crossover and is based on the HabaNiro concept from 2019.
The new Kia Niro has been completely redesigned under the brand’s ‘Opposites United’ design philosophy, fulfilling ‘Joy for Reason’ ethos with crossover inspired-looks and high-tech dual tone body. Up front there are ‘heartbeat’ styled LED DRLs nestled in split-type headlights. Kia’s signature ‘tiger nose’ grille has evolved into what Kia calls a ‘tiger face’, with the slim, full-width upper grille and large lower grille forming the bone-shaped graphic. A wide pillar at the rear aims to enhance air flow to improve aerodynamics and blends into the boomerang-shaped rear taillights. There is a trapezoidal-stamped tailgate as well as the same ‘heartbeat’ styled lighting signature at the rear end.
Inside, the asymmetrical dashboard surrounds the driver and passenger and incorporates a large curved display panel. The off-center dash curves around the front occupants with horizontal and diagonal lines opposing each. The center console has been designed to be easy to operate and features the electronic dial-type shift lever. The audio-visual screen and air vents are incorporated within the diagonal gaps of the modern dash design, while ambient mood lighting heightens the senses and creates a welcoming interior. The seats have been designed to enhance roominess, comfort and style by applying a high-tech lightweight seat mechanism. The headrests’ back cover incorporates a coat hanger, while the slim dimensions of the headrest helps to increase the feeling of space.
Keeping in-line with sustainability, the new Kia Niro boasts recycled materials inside the cabin. The headlining is made from recycled wallpaper, the seats are made from Bio PU with Tencel from eucalyptus leaves, and BTX free paint is used on the door panels to minimize the impact on the environment and reduce waste.
Kia hasn’t revealed technical details and powertrain options for the new Niro yet, however it says the hybrid versions will comes equipped with a Greenzone drive mode, which automatically switches into EV mode when driving in residential areas or near schools or hospitals based on navigation and driving history data. It will also recognize the user’s favorite places, such as a home or office registered in the navigation system, as a green zone.
