Koenigsegg Regera sets a New 0-400-0 km/h Record

Nearly two years ago, Koenigsegg set 0-400-0 km/h world record when an Agera RS accomplished the feat in a blistering 33.29 seconds. Now the Swedish automaker has broken its own record with a Koenigsegg Regera, completing the run in just 31.49 seconds. That is 1.8 seconds quicker than the Agera RS, and a full 10.47 seconds faster than the Bugatti Chiron.

Koenigsegg Regera features a 5.0 liter twin-turbo V8 and three electric motors – one on each rear wheel providing direct electric drive, and another on the crankshaft for torque-fill – giving it a total system output of 1,479 hp and 2,000 Nm of torque.

What makes the Regera unique is use of the patent-pending Koenigsegg Direct Drive (KDD) instead of a conventional multi-gear transmission, which sees a direct drive to the car’s rear axle from the combustion engine. In operation, the electric motors handle propulsion at speeds of less than 48 km/h, with the internal combustion engine only kicking into action beyond that.

According to CEO and founder Christian von Koenigsegg:

“This was a good opportunity to showcase the true capability of the Regera’s one-of-a-kind Direct Drive transmission. As the Regera only has one gear we had to make use of it from standstill to the record top speed of 403 km/h limited by rpm”.

The record attempt was conducted at the Råda airfield close to the town of Lidköping, although the company states, “as this runway is normally unused and dormant, the surface was not great for traction. Furthermore, it was not possible to drive in a straight line, as some bumps had to be avoided.” The record breaking Koenigsegg Regera was driven by company test driver Sonny Persson, and performance data for the run was captured using an AiM EVO5 data logger and AiM GPS08 together with a Racelogic VBOX 3i.

Despite the less than ideal conditions, the Regera only took 22.87 seconds to accelerate to 400 km/h over 1613.2 meters. Deceleration to a controlled stop took 8.62 seconds over distance of 435.26 meters, and the total distance used for 0-400-0 km/h run was 2048.46 meters. Koenigsegg said the feat could be completed in less than 2,000 meters if the conditions were more favorable.

Commenting on its braking capabilities, the company said:

“What is really impressive is how incredible the Regera brakes – 8.62 seconds from 400 km/h to 0 km/h is just unheard of. It is a testament to the Regera’s balance, suspension, aerodynamics and of course it’s in-house design and built Koenigsegg brake calipers. The proven numbers now show the greatness of the Regera. Having said that, we know we can improve these already impressive numbers on a track with better conditions.”
