Next-Gen Toyota Corolla Might Use BYD Tech

The current 12-generation Toyota Corolla has been around since 2018 and has entered the 6th year of its production. Discussions about the 13th-gen model are already underway, with various artists sharing speculative renderings online, though the Japanese automaker has not released any official details yet.

However, according to Best Car (via Drive), the 13th-gen Toyota Corolla could make its world premiere in 2026. In addition to offering the 13th-generation Corolla in gasoline, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid versions, the report also suggests it may incorporate some electrification technology from BYD.

This shouldn’t be surprising since Toyota and BYD have a joint venture when it comes to electrified vehicles. This venture is called BYD Toyota Electric Vehicle Technology and one of its first products is the Toyota bZ3 which is currently on sale in China.

The 13th-gen Corolla may pair Toyota’s new 1.5L engine with BYD’s Blade battery system and electric motors. It could work the same way as the one found in the upcoming BYD Sealion 6 with the engine merely serving as a generator for the electric drive system.

The Corolla remains one of Toyota’s key revenue drivers, with over 800,000 units sold last year. However, this also reflects a sales decline of approximately 19% compared to the previous year. Hopefully, the upcoming 2026 introduction of the new model will boost sales of the Toyota Corolla.
