The Toyota GR Yaris hot hatch debuted four years ago in January 2020, and now the Japanese automaker has unveiled its updated iteration that lives up to its name.

The refreshed GR Yaris offers more power, a new transmission option, and an anti-lag control system. Beginning with the engine, Toyota has increased the power output of the 1.6L three-cylinder unit, which instead of 260hp/ 360 Nm now produces 300hp of power and 400Nm of torque. The engine is paired with a new 8-speed Gazoo Racing Direct Automatic Transmission, tried and tested by the TGR World Rally Team drivers across various road surfaces. The vehicle is also equipped with a front and rear-mounted Torsen LSD albeit in higher trims only.
Power is sent to all 4 wheels via Toyota’s GR-FOUR AWD system. Due to the demands of a higher output engine and the 8-speed automatic transmission, Toyota offers a “Cooling package”. The automatic transmission variants are already outfitted with a transmission cooler as standard, but Toyota offers a sub-radiator, cool air intake, and intercooler sprayer as factory-installed options. While power has been increased, so has the Yaris’ body rigidity and chassis strength. Toyota says it has increased the number of spot welding points by 13% and expanded the area where structural advice has been applied by 24%.
Regarding styling, the refreshed GR Yaris features a new front fascia, consisting of a new lower grille and accompanying functional side air intakes. Outlets positioned on the sides of the bumper exhaust heat from the sub-radiator and transmission cooler.
The interior has also undergone a significant restructuring, all in the name of improved visibility and operability. The control panel has been tilted 15 degrees toward the driver, the driving position has been lowered by 25 mm, the rearview mirror has been moved to the top of the windshield, the shift level was raised by 75 mm, and the upper edge of the center cluster has been lowered by 50 mm. New components in the interior include a new 12.3-inch TFT gauge display, and a vertical parking brake mounted next to the gear selector, offered as a factory-installed option.

Moreover, the Japanese spec 2024 GR Yaris is equipped with a “Circuit Mode” which is a paid option that allows for unrestricted use of the GR Yaris’ full potential but only on track. The benefits of using this mode include an anti-lag control system, an increase in the speed limit, a maximization of the cooling fan output for lower engine water temperature, and a shift timing indicator. Sales of the new Toyota GR Yaris will begin by spring this year.
