17 automobiles were crash-tested by Euro NCAP in the year 2023. Nine of them, or more than 50% of the evaluated cars, were Chinese EVs. According to Euro NCAP, Chinese automakers were keen to demonstrate their value to European consumers. Since every assessed made-in-China vehicle received a 5-star rating, they have pretty much succeeded in their goal.
These 9 Chinese models are from four brands— BYD, Xpeng, Nio, and Smart. The list includes BYD Dolphin, BYD Seal, BYD Seal-U (Song Plus), BYD Tang, Xpeng G9, Xpeng P7, Nio EL7 (ES7), Nio ET5 and Smart #3. Why the Smart #3 can be labeled as a “Chinese car”, well because it sits on Geely’s SEA architecture, utilizes parts from Geely’s subsidiaries, and is manufactured by Geely in China.

It is worth mentioning that the Nio ET5 became the safest vehicle tested by the European Association in 2023, even surpassing the Volkswagen ID.7. Let’s take a quick look at the findings of crash-tested Chinese vehicles, ranked from lowest to highest.
Xpeng G9
Xpeng G9 is a large 5-door SUV. It has an adult occupant score of 85%, a child occupant score of 85%, vulnerable road users 78%, and a safety assist score of 78%.
BYD Tang
BYD Tang is also a 5-door SUV and has an adult occupant & child occupant score of 87% each, an 80% score in vulnerable road users, and 73% in safety assist systems.
Xpeng P7
Xpeng P7 is a 4-door sedan. It boasts an 87% score on the adult occupant test, 81% each on the child occupant & vulnerable road user test, and 78% on the safety assist system.
BYD Seal-U (Song Plus)
The BYD Song Plus 5-door SUV is sold as Seal-U in export markets. It boasts an impressive 90% in the adult occupant category, 86% in child occupant, 83% in vulnerable road users, and 73% in safety assist systems.
BYD Seal
The BYD Seal 4-door sedan is seen as an arch-rival of the Tesla Model 3. It has an adult occupant score of 89%, a child occupant score of 87%, an 82% score in vulnerable road users, and 76% in safety assist systems.
BYD Dolphin
The BYD Dolphin 5-door hatchback has an adult occupant score of 89%, a child occupant score of 87%, vulnerable road users of 85%, and 79% in safety assist systems.
Nio EL7 (ES7)
The Nio EL7 is a mid-size 5-door SUV. In China, it sells under the ES7 name. However, Nio was forced to change its name by Audi to avoid affecting the interests of Audi’s customers in Europe. The EL7 boasts an impressive 93% adult occupant score, a child occupant score of 85%, vulnerable road users of 80%, and a safety assist score of 79%.
Smart #3
Classified as a 5-door hatchback, the Smart #3 was developed in collaboration with Geely and Mercedes-Benz. It is styled by Mercedes but developed and manufactured by Geely since all the tech under the skin including EV architecture, battery & motor are Chinese. It has 90%, 86%, 84%, and 85% scores in adult occupant, child occupant, vulnerable road users, and safety assist systems respectively.
Nio ET5/ ET5 Touring
The Nio ET5 4-door liftback saloon tops the list of all the cars tested by Euro NCAP in 2023. It scored 96% in the adult occupant segment, 85% in child occupant, 83% in the vulnerable road users category, and 81% in safety assist systems.
Talking about adult safety, the Nio ET5 was the best of 9 Chinese cars evaluated by Euro NCAP in 2023. BYD Dolphin, Seal, and Tang boasts the best child occupant safety. The BYD Dolphin has the best result among all Chinese cars in the vulnerable road users segment, while the Smart #3 tops in the safety assist category.
