Toyota Urban Cruiser EV SUV: The Suzuki eVitara Twin

Toyota has revealed its Suzuki eVitara twin, dubbed the Urban Cruiser EV. Don’t confuse it with the 2024 Urban Cruiser Taisor (a rebadged Suzuki Fronx), the 2022 Urban Cruiser HyRyder (a Suzuki Grand Vitara twin), the 2020 Urban Cruiser (based on the Suzuki Vitara Brezza), or the 2008–2014 Urban Cruiser (essentially the second-gen Toyota Ist).

Measuring 4,285 mm in length, 1,800 mm in width, and 1,640 mm in height, with a 2,700 mm wheelbase, the electric SUV is smaller than the bZ4X but slightly larger than the Yaris Cross. It aims to attract buyers of Volvo EX40 (formerly XC40 Recharge), Peugeot e-3008, Hyundai Kona, or MINI Aceman.

It shares its powertrains with the eVitara: a 144 PS/189 Nm single-motor FWD paired with a 49 kWh battery, a 174 PS/189 Nm single-motor FWD with a 61 kWh battery, or a 184 PS/300 Nm dual-motor AWD setup, also with a 61 kWh battery.

All the batteries are lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP), and the AWD version features a 65 PS rear motor. While Suzuki hasn’t disclosed official range figures yet, Autocar estimates the larger battery could deliver around 400 km, with a maximum charging rate of 150 kW.

In terms of design, the Urban Cruiser has a more striking presence compared to its Suzuki counterpart. Its ‘Hammerhead’ front end, reminiscent of the latest Camry, gives it a bold look, complemented by prominent cladding around the wheel arches and lower body. These details, combined with the sculpted rear haunches, lend the SUV a muscular stance. The 18- or 19-inch wheels come with aerodynamic covers, and the car boasts a tight turning radius of just 5.2 meters.

With a wheelbase 140 mm longer than the Yaris Cross, the Urban Cruiser offers more interior room. The rear seats, which recline and split 40:20:40, can slide forward to expand the boot space or backward to create interior room comparable to larger D-segment SUVs.

The interior boasts a low, horizontally designed instrument panel paired with a high seating position for optimal visibility. Key features include 12-color ambient lighting, a 360-degree camera, and dual screens—a 10.1-inch central touchscreen seamlessly integrated with a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster.

Higher-spec variants offer additional perks such as a JBL sound system, a sunroof, and a powered driver’s seat. On the safety front, the Urban Cruiser is equipped with a pre-collision system, adaptive cruise control, lane departure alert, and lane keep assist.

According to Autocar, the Toyota Urban Cruiser will be manufactured in India alongside the Suzuki eVitara. Its public debut is scheduled for the 2025 Brussels Motor Show, running from January 10 to 19.
