Almost a month after the all new fifth generation Kia Sportage was unveiled, the South Korean automaker has released technical details about the most popular product in its global portfolio. Details released are of the Long Wheelbase (LWB) version whereas the new Sportage just like its cousin Hyundai Tucson, will be available in a Short Wheelbase (SWB) version which will be introduced most likely in the European markets.

As far as the dimensions are concerned, the new Sportage measures 4,660 mm long, 1,865 mm wide and 1,660 mm tall with a wheelbase of 2,755 mm. According to Kia, these proportions along with the improved packaging brought by the new platform give the compact crossover, a segment-leading headroom, legroom, and an impressive 637 liters of cargo volume.
In terms of engines, there is a 1.6L turbocharged petrol unit good for 177 hp of power and 265 Nm of torque & comes paired with either a standard 6-speed manual or a 7-speed, dual-clutch automatic transmission. Fuel economy figures are 12.5 km per liter. Then there is a 2.0L diesel producing 183 hp and 417 Nm that comes mated to a heavily upgraded 8-speed automatic gearbox. Fuel consumption for this engine is rated at 14.6 km per liter when fitted with standard front-wheel drive. More petrol and diesel variants are planned, along with hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions set to feature something called E-Handling.
The new Sportage will also get a Terrain Mode encompassing Drive, Comfort, Eco, Sport, and Smart selectable modes that alter the vehicle’s settings to suit the type of terrain, including mud, sand, and snow. Kia has also added a new electronic control suspension with real-time damping control working harmoniously with the electronically controlled AWD system for optimal power delivery. Plus the 5th gen Kia Sportage will also get an X-Line trim to essentially an off-road visual package to give the crossover a slightly more rugged appearance. Alternatively, customers can also go for the GT-Line model for a more sportier design. There will be a variety of alloy wheels from 17-inches to as large as 19-inches, available in different designs, colors, and finishes.

Inside, the cabin gets a pair of 12-inch screens with a fully digital instrument cluster and infotainment’s touchscreen. The 2022 Kia Sportage also benefits from a more compact shift-by-wire transmission dial for the automatic and can be had with a Harman Kardon sound system.
Safety-wise, the Sportage comes with new safety restraints (including the airbags) and a light yet stiff body structure. It also comes with all the latest driver assistance systems, including autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection and Highway Driving Assist (HDA) Level 2 semi-autonomous driving functionality – the latter utilizing a new adaptive cruise control system that adjusts the speed based on navigation data. Other safety features include blind spot monitoring and collision avoidance, blind spot cameras and Remote Smart Parking Assist (RSPA) that allows you to remotely park into or exit a spot from outside the vehicle.

Having been introduced in its home market with price ranging from from 24.42 million won (PKR 33.91 lac) to 31.85 million won (PKR 47.01 lac), the all-new Kia Sportage along with its shorter-wheelbase version will go on sale in global markets later this year.
