Commercial Production of Sazgar-BAIC Vehicles to Commence in September

Sazgar Engineering Works Limited (SEWL) has informed the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) on Friday that it will commence commercial production of its BAIC vehicles from September 2021. In a notification sent to PSX, the company said:

“We are pleased to inform you that after successful completion of trial operation, the commercial production of the BAIC vehicles will be commenced with effect from 1st September 2021.”

Test production at Sazgar’s plant was already commenced in May 2021 with the first locally assembled unit of BAIC BJ40 Plus SUV rolling off the assembly lines. This also appears to be a sound strategy by Sazgar to launch the products when they are fully ready to do so, unlike Proton which launched the vehicles (X70 in December 2020 and Saga in February 2021) without their plant in operational condition and is still unable to make deliveries even after several months of launch.

In addition to the BAIC BJ40, Sazgar will also likely introduce the X25 crossover as well as the sedan and hatchback variants of the BAIC D20. The vehicles were also put on display at the PAPS show held in February 2020. Sazgar already enjoys the Category-A Greenfield status for the BAIC project, however it also teamed up with another Chinese automaker GWM to introduce Haval branded SUVs and received the Greenfield status earlier this year for the Haval project as well.

As previously reported by the company officials, the BAIC vehicles will be very competitively priced and will give a good competition to the existing options available in the market.
