The next-generation MG3 hatchback was spotted testing in China in August. Now the latest spy pics of a camouflaged test mule have appeared on the internet as the vehicle has reached Sydney, Australia for trials & tests.

The 3rd generation MG3 hatchback adopts the brand’s latest design language showing a radical departure from the styling trends of the current generation model, which debuted in 2011 and has received multiple facelifts since then. It almost looks like a hatchback version of the MG5 (which is also known as MG GT in various markets).
The interior is also a massive overhaul from the preceding model with a double-D cut multi-function steering wheel, and two freestanding screens on the dashboard, one behind the steering wheel acting as an instrument panel while the other as a central multimedia unit. The center stack now gets a rotary dial for gear selection instead of a traditional lever, with an electronic parking brake & other functions adjacent to it. For the first time, the MG3 will sport a sunroof as well.
Next generation MG3 test mule in Australia
The all-new MG3 will be offered with a hybrid powertrain option while the company will be keeping the traditional gasoline engine version alive as well. The hybrid setup in 3rd gen MG3 will include a 1.5L engine with 109 hp and 142 Nm that works in tandem with an electric motor with 95 hp and 200 Nm. A turbocharged engine option is also on the cards, but it hasn’t been confirmed by MG yet. Safety equipment is expected to get a massive boost too.
Despite its upmarket push with hybrid and other technologies, MG Motor Australia & New Zealand CEO Peter Ciao has confirmed the new MG3 will remain an ‘affordable’ option – the main reason why the current model is so popular despite its age. Bear in mind that MG3 has been the bestselling small car in Australia for many years (and overall 3rd bestselling car only behind Toyota Corolla and Hyundai i30) and it is understandable why Australia (a right-hand drive market) will be among the very first to welcome the latest generation model of the MG3. It is also currently the only car in Australia (other than the Kia Picanto) to be priced under $20,000 AUD. To be precise, available from just 19,990 AUD drive-away, the MG3 outsells the Suzuki Swift by more than two to one, and the Kia Rio and Mazda2 by more than three to one.

Besides Australia & New Zealand, the MG3 is also available in other right-hand drive markets such as Thailand and the UK where it does reasonably well in sales. A formal launch of the all-new MG3 hatchback in overseas markets is expected to take place during the first quarter of 2024.
MG3 gained popularity in Pakistan ever since Javed Afridi teased this hatchback to be priced below Rs 2.0 million in Pakistan, making it as affordable as a Suzuki Alto. However, more than two & a half years have passed with no evidence of the MG3, despite Javed Afridi’s repeated teasing about the hatchback and his frequent pleas for his fans to be prepared for the vehicle that is “Coming Soon.”
